Order of the Stick Fanart by Xandyr78 Order of the Stick Fanart by Xandyr78
This is fanart for Rich Burlew's "Order of the Stick" webcomic, which is, quite frankly, one of the most brilliantly-written and charmingly simple comics in existence. If you'd like to read the comic, you may start at its beginning here:

[link]

I just wanted to see what I could do about reproducing the title characters in a VERY, VERY different fashion, while still holding true (hopefully) to their origins. Not sure how well I did, but it was a LOT of fun (if a bit of a nightmare) to produce.

The Order of the Stick is copyright 2011 by Rich Burlew, all rights are his. This work is fanart only.

My mind is blown! This is too dang cool and I usually don't care for this type of photoshop art style. Kudos!!

So good. They stick true to the comic's drawings while adding realistic (in terms of art style) flare. I especially like what you've done with the Greenhilt Sword. The only problem I have is Belkar. His feet are proportionate to his height and aren't covered in hair, and he doesn't look 'savage' enough.

Thanks for the feedback and the fave!  I agree with you on Belkar; when I created this, my PC wasn't capable of a lot of what I wanted to do.  I'll have to go back and re-create this sometime with my new system.

Wow, this is brilliant!! LOVE IT!
..also, I agreed with Kaytara, colors seem too dark, but than again, this isnt drawn, so colors should be darker than in comics, right?

I think a lot of the "darkness" in colors can be attributed to differences in monitor calibration. I see everything just fine on both my laptop and my desktop, but others have trouble. I dunno.

and yeah, as far as the color choices go, I wanted darker, more muted, slightly more realistic colors, not so much the vibrant colors of a comic page. thanks for the fave!

LOVE IT. My only suggestion is to make V's Robes looser, so the gender is still an unknown.

You did an amazing job with the faces

My advice on V, keep the robes LOOSE so we don't clearly see hir lack of boobs... And (s)he looks like she has wide shoulders and a thin waist, now the V we know has a strength penalty and didn't get much fresh air as a kid :)

Belkar seems like a tiny elf rather than a halfling? Did he start waxing his feet or sth? :)
And Durkon looks like a halfling with metal shoes :) He is not short & stubby he is just scaled down. I think his head needs to be wider.

WOW! Awesome! I always love seeing the Order rendered somewhat realistically - it reminds me how badass they are!

While I guess V's face could be a little slimmer, I actually like hir overall look. Actually, I like seeing a slightly more masculine Vaarsuvius than most people draw. (I think people tend to forget that "androgynous" means a balance of male and female characteristics, not "skinny girl w/o boobs.") This one could easily go either way - the soft facial features balance out the shape of the face.

Looks like Belkar got over his weapon shrinkage. :D

wow! very well done!

I like your interpretion of durkon. I only would have given him more bigger leg parts so he would look more bulky and sturdy. :-)

V could be more androgynous. ;D

really awesome job on Hailey!!

really awesome job on Roy!!

nice job on Belker! where´s the cat? have you forgot about the weapon shrinkage from episode 001? :D

overall a really good work!

Thanks for the feedback! I'd really like to go back and rework this when I have a computer that can handle more than 2 figures in a scene. rendering them in pair (some more than once) to get the shadowing correct and consistent was a pain. There are 4-5 separate renders for this picture alone. LOL

at least we know why there has to be so much better computer hardware every 6 months. ;D

good luck with the pic. I know 3D-art can be a pain in the ass. years ago I´ve tried it, too, but quickly found out: that´s nothing I want to do. :)

I can understand why you'd feel that way. :) For me, though, my own artistic skills, while they're decent, cannot achieve what I can do with 3D and digital art in general. Maybe it's me taking the lazy way out...but I find that what I've had to learn to use these software packages has affected my overall artistic capability, as well...so it's a good thing.

Remiya, I did NOT do the modeling myself. The textures are varied, mostly from Renderosity and/or DAZ3D. Almost all of them, however, have been tweaked somewhat by myself to achieve the look I wanted.

ok I see. Which shader did you use for rendering? uberenvironment?

I can't believe I missed this question. And yes, it was the Uberenvironment. Normally, though, I render both a UE pass and a non-shader-based lighting setup, to give deeper shadows, and I composite them in Photoshop. CS5 is amazing.

i know, Photoshop is truly Adobe's gift to digital artists everywhere. sadly UE renders take so very long, especially with hair.

So true. If I were better at digital painting, I don't think I'd even RENDER hair.

you know, that's probably not a bad way to go.
why not try it sometime? i'd like to see how it turns out.

i think the main problem would lie in making the lighting consistent with the rest of the scene.

Thanks, all! I'll try and get the kinks ironed out when I can find the time. :) Having to render each character separately (since my computer can't handle the texture load for a half-dozen dressed humanoids), it gets hard to keep everything in line.

After looking at the high-res version, I have this to add:
I think the colours are just a little dark in general, at least on my monitor. V's hair looks nearly black, and Haley looks more like a brunette who tinted her hair red than the radiant ginger she is in the comic, though I suppose this could just be artistic freedom on your part. :D And V's face is wonderfully done, on second thought, but just a bit too wide, particularly with the unflattering light.

Hi, Kaytara!

Thanks for the feedback! I think it's a monitor issue. While V's clothing IS too dark, I can see the purple in V's hair even in the smaller version. I agree with you on Haley's hair...if I can get my masking down, I'll fix that ASAP.

Lighting is one of my weakest points right now. I wish I had better grasp of it. I've been tooling around with 3D art for a couple of years, but I've never sat down and attempted to really create a mood. Maybe someday I'll get it down.

*agrees with Kaytara*
the ... roundness of V's face and large hand size makes V look more masculine...
Elan's hair reminds me of Stephan Harper. >.<
Other than that, nice job!

More light?

You know, kid, we have a group for awesomeness like this. :)

I love, love the depictions to death. I love Belkar's little smirk there. I'd expect Haley and Elan to have lighter comlexions, but all of the characters look pretty much how I'd imagined them. Except for V's face which really should be more bird-boned and skinny, V being an elf and all. And of course Xykon's face in the background just rocks. An awesome team shot. ^^
